Our History

diner

The Diner of Los Gatos is an All-American 50's Diner located on Hwy 9 (Los Gatos Saratoga Rd) in Los Gatos. One of the few diners left in the Bay Area that serves all of the classic 50's fare with huge portions and moderate prices. The Diner is outfitted with neon and retro decor, table-top jukebox's and hits playing from the 50's and 60's all day. The Diner of Los Gatos is owned and operated by two generations of the tightly knit Tsaboukos family, which has made its living in the restaurant business for more than 30 years. The brothers Tsaboukos came to California in two waves. The first three to leave their village of Zevgolatio, Greece, in the mid-1950s were Jimmy, just 16 at the time, and the older Paul and Tommy. They immediately went to work in restaurants, where they washed dishes and bused tables. They saved their money, and eventually Tommy bought his own restaurant in San Jose, a 24-hour cafe called Around the Clock. The cafe provided employment for brothers Tasso and Frank when they arrived from Greece about 10 years later. While Jimmy continued to buy and operate a series of restaurants, including his still-operating Westside Billiards and eatery on San Carlos Street in San Jose, Tasso worked his way from dishwasher to cook at a number of restaurants, including Original Joe's in San Jose, until 1979 when he bought Lou's.
In 1992, Tasso and Jimmy bought The Diner. Over the years, The Diner has become a local landmark, a constant in Los Gatos' breakfast and lunch scene and an evening destination for local residents, students and visitors. No visit to Los Gatos is complete without a stop to The Diner. The menu ranges from burgers and benedicts to pastas and home made meatloaf. We invite you to come back to the 50's!!
